What is the purpose of the TOK-ARMABIT asphalt reinforcement and what advantages does it offer?
Asphalt reinforcement strengthens the body of the road generally and absorbs or respectively distributes stresses. The preferred use for asphalt reinforcements is to combat reflection cracking, which occurs for example when areas of concrete are covered with asphalt. In the asphalt layer, these cracks frequently appear above the apparent joints in the concrete, as movement takes place there that the asphalt in certain circumstances cannot absorb. An asphalt reinforcement with low elasticity and high tensile force can prevent such cracks. The elasticity should not exceed a maximum of approx. 3 % and it should be possible to lay the reinforcement securely in position. ARMABIT meets both these demands.
Can seam sealants such as TOK-Plast compound also be used in asphalt road construction for rehabilitation work, for example in excavations?
The use of seam sealants and the formation of a seam is only permitted, according to the M SNAR data sheet ("Merkblatt für Schichtenverbund, Nähte, Anschlüsse und Randausbildung von Verkehrsflächen aus Asphalt" - data sheet for layer bond, seams, joints and edging of asphalt traffic areas) only if the construction process is "new to new." In all other cases a joint must be formed with bitumen joint tape or subsequent cutting and pouring. The ZTV A-StB 97 (Zusätzliche Technische Vertragsbedingungen und Richtlinien für Aufgrabungen in Verkehrsflächen - German Additional Technical Contractual Conditions and Directives for Excavations in Traffic Areas) permit joints only for excavations. These must be at least 10mm wide and stable.
What does "TOK" actually mean?
TOK is an abbreviation and stands for the German Tonrohrmuffenkitt (clay pipe sleeve mastic).
The term comes from DENSO's early years, when a special mastic was developed for sealing clay pipe sleeves.
Later, the abbreviation TOK became a name that accompanied many innovative DENSO products. The term TOK-Band, in particular, is known throughout the world and has become a synonym for all bitumen joint tapes on the market.
